Tyre Couplings

Tyre couplings, also known as tire couplings, are a type of flexible coupling used to connect two shafts, typically in rotating machinery. They consist of a flexible elastomeric tire (or tyre, depending on the spelling convention) sandwiched between two metal hubs.

The elastomeric tire is usually made of natural rubber or synthetic materials such as neoprene or polyurethane. It is designed to absorb shocks, vibrations, and misalignments between the connected shafts while transmitting torque from one shaft to another. The metal hubs are typically made of steel or cast iron and are securely attached to the shafts.

The design of tyre couplings allows for some radial, axial, and angular misalignment between the shafts without causing undue stress on the connected equipment. This flexibility helps to reduce wear and tear on bearings, seals, and other components, thereby extending the life of the machinery and reducing maintenance costs.

Tyre couplings are commonly used in a wide range of industrial applications, including pumps, compressors, conveyors, generators, and fans, where reliable torque transmission and flexibility are required. They are particularly well-suited for applications where shock loads, torsional vibrations, or shaft misalignments are present, as they can help to dampen these effects and protect the connected equipment.

Overall, tyre couplings are valued for their simplicity, durability, and ability to provide effective torque transmission while accommodating various types of misalignment.
